Active space
Category
Subject
Active space is the empty area in front of a moving subject that shows where it's going, creating a sense of motion and anticipation.
Why it works: Our eyes naturally follow movement, and leading space (the active area in front) lets the subject's path feel deliberate rather than trapped.
- Rule of thumb: For running figures or vehicles, leave 1.5–2× more space ahead than behind. That imbalance reads as speed.
- Common pitfall: Centering a moving subject kills the dynamism—the viewer doesn't sense a destination.
- Pro tip: Crank the shutter speed down slightly (1/30th for a bike) and pan the camera—the crisp subject against blurred background + active space = motion you can almost hear.
