Choker framing
Category
Subject
Choker framing is a tight portrait composition that crops just below the chin, filling the frame with the subject's face to heighten emotional intensity and forge an unbreakable eye-contact with the viewer.
Why it works: Choker framing eliminates every distraction — shoulders, clothing, background — so the viewer has nowhere to look but the eyes. It's pure emotional voltage. But if the gaze is blank, the image falls flat; always direct your subject to project a clear, focused emotion.
- Pitfall: cropping exactly at the chin can look like a mistake. Cut slightly lower (mid-neck) or higher (jawline) for a deliberate, editorial feel.
- Pair it with: a wide aperture (low f‑stop) to blur the background into a smooth wash — this pushes the face even more into the foreground.
