Lightweight open-weave cotton with a loose grid and soft fray, used in blotting papers and sheet masks; diffuses light and adds tactile softness.
Cotton gauze is a loosely woven fabric with a visible crosshatch of threads and a soft, feathery texture. Used in everything from medical bandages to haute couture, its low thread count creates a delicate, breathable structure. In skincare, it appears as blotting papers and soaking sheet masks.
To capture cotton gauze effectively, pull focus on a small area where the weave dominates. Strong side light accentuates the thread relief and creates tiny shadow lines. A macro lens around 50-100mm lets you fill the frame with just enough context to read the fabric. Soft, natural light preserves the material’s innocence; avoid harsh flash.
It’s a wonderful accent for fashion editorials, still-life vignettes, or medical concept art. Pair it with dark wood, skin, or metals for contrast.
Watch for: Easily confused with cheesecloth or muslin, which are finer; true gauze has that distinct square grid you can see through. Include a few flyaway threads for authenticity.
