Light is your revealer. Raking side light casts micro-shadows across the twill's diagonal ridges, so the weave reads instantly. Without it, denim flattens and loses its identity.

Color tells the fabric's story. Deep indigo with red undertones signals quality; areas of wear—edges, folds, high points—should expose the white weft, creating the familiar gently-aged look, even on a new garment. Avoid over-texturing: denim's weave is fine and rhythmic; too much bump turns it into something coarser like canvas.
