Abstract art is artwork that leaves out realistic detail, using shapes, colors and lines on their own so you see form and feeling, not a copy of a thing.
Compose, don't filter. Blurring a photo still reads as a photo of a thing; in abstract art the shapes carry the whole image, so decide them first — one dominant form, a smaller shape to balance it, and one color that repeats.
Not the same as a pattern. A pattern (wallpaper, fabric) repeats edge to edge to fill a surface; abstract art is composed as one picture with a single balance point. Reach for abstraction when mood matters more than a recognizable subject.
