Outsider art is work by self-taught makers outside galleries and art schools — raw, obsessive images packed with pattern, odd scale and private symbols.
Know its neighbours. Folk art comes from a shared community tradition passed down through generations. Naive art is self-taught too, but usually tidy and cheerful. Outsider art is private and compulsive, often with no audience in mind.
Push it rawer. If results drift cute or childlike, swap in art brut (the original French term, literally 'raw art') or name humble materials like ballpoint on cardboard or house paint on scrap wood. Steer clear of polished words like 'detailed' or 'realistic', which pull it back toward academic finish.
Nothing yet — be the first.
