Action painting is abstract art made by dripping, flinging and splashing paint onto a canvas, so the finished surface records every swing of the painter's arm.
Keep it subject-free
Action painting is non-representational (it shows no recognizable things). Ask for a face or a city on top and the model usually compromises, leaving tame splatter over a picture. Let the paint be the whole image.
- Name the paint: enamel, house paint or sand-mixed pigment changes how drips pool and crack.
- Not the same as drip painting: drip painting is one method inside action painting, which also covers broad slashing brushstrokes.
- Not abstract expressionism either: that is the wider movement, which also includes calm colour field painting (large flat areas of colour).
