A split-level underwater shot is a frame split horizontally by the water surface, revealing the world above and below the waterline at the same time.
Balancing two worlds: A split-level underwater shot requires a wide-angle dome port (a curved glass housing over the camera lens) to push the waterline away and keep both halves in sharp focus.
Managing light diffs: Water absorbs light quickly, making the underwater scene darker than the air above. Choose bright direct sunlight or use underwater strobes (camera flashes) to balance exposure across the split.
