Mid shot — framing a person from about the waist up, so you see face, hands, and posture at once: close enough for expression, wide enough for gesture.
Where the frame cuts
Not to be confused with a medium close-up, which cuts at the chest and trades hands for a tighter read on the face. A cowboy shot drops lower, to mid-thigh.
- Reach for it when gesture matters as much as expression: talking, holding something, reacting.
- Synonym check: "medium shot" means the same framing, so either term works in a prompt.
- Pitfall: a square crop squeezes out the arms. Taller or wider ratios keep both hands in frame.
