Use rack focus when you want to guide the viewer's eye between two distinct story points aligned along the same depth axis. It relies on shallow depth of field (a narrow zone of sharpness) created by a wide aperture (like f/1.8).
To make the optic effect obvious, separate your subjects physically in space—place one close to the camera lens and the other far behind—so one stays razor-sharp while the other melts into soft blur.
