Working with gouache

Gouache is perfect when you need bold, solid color that doesn't bleed or layer transparently. Unlike watercolor, you can paint light over dark because it's opaque. The matte finish means no glare, so it scans and photographs beautifully — great for illustration and design work.

A common pitfall: gouache reactivates when rewet, so avoid scrubbing into dry layers or you'll lift them. Work thick to thin, and let each layer dry completely before adding another. For a smooth, even look, use a flat brush and keep the paint consistency like heavy cream.
