pointillism
Pointillism is a painting technique where small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns. The viewer's eye optically mixes the dots to see a vibrant, unified image.
Pointillism relies on optical mixing — the dots blend in your eye, not on the palette. This produces a luminous, vibrating effect impossible with blended paint.
Distance is key: step back and the dots merge into a smooth image; step close and the pure color fragments are visible. Best for subjects that benefit from a shimmering surface — fruit, flowers, water.
The pitfall: too few dots creates a sketchy look; too many muddies the effect. Keep each dot distinct and let the canvas show between them.
