Redscale is a photographic technique where color negative film is exposed in reverse, yielding a warm, reddish-orange toned image with deep red shadows and orange highlights.
Why redscale works
Redscale turns any image into a warm monochrome. It replaces the full spectrum with a narrow band of deep reds, burnt oranges, and pale ambers — instantly unifying the frame and giving it a nostalgic, almost dreamlike quality.
Watch for loss of contrast. Because everything shifts to similar warm hues, subjects can blend together. Add a contrasting shadow or a pop of pale yellow highlight to keep forms readable.
Pair it with high-contrast lighting — a hard key light from one side — so the redscale effect feels intentional, not muddy.
