Gothic color scheme — a palette of near-black, blood red, deep purple and cold grey that makes any subject read as dark, old and slightly ominous.
Noir is monochrome — only blacks, whites and greys. A gothic color scheme keeps those darks but admits one strong accent (oxblood, violet, moss green). Remove that accent and it collapses into plain noir; add three more and everything turns muddy.
Pair with matte surfaces and a single hard light source — shine and bounced light cancel the gloom.
Backfires on anything sold as clean or new: food, skincare, consumer tech.
