Cantilever composition
Category
Subject
Cantilever composition anchors a visual element at one end while letting it project far out over open space, creating dramatic visual tension and overhang.
Creating Visual Tension
Use overhang to generate instant visual gravity. The secret is maximizing the unassisted space beneath your projecting shape—the larger the gap between the overhang and the ground, the stronger the psychological pull.
Watch the anchor: Ensure the base side feels visually heavy enough to hold the extension. If both sides look lightweight, the image loses its sense of physical defiance and simply feels unbalanced.
