Split toning is a color grading technique where you apply one hue to the highlights and a different, often complementary, hue to the shadows, creating a dual-color wash across the image.
Pair opposites for tension. Warm highlights (gold, sepia) against cool shadows (teal, blue) creates cinematic pop.
Beware the skin-tone trap. On portraits, push the highlight hue too far and people look jaundiced; keep it subtle or mask skin for natural results.
Go beyond the slider. Lightroom's default split toning is heavy-handed—use it as a base, then refine with Curves per channel for a filmic roll-off.
