Desolate — an emotional atmosphere of stark emptiness and isolation, marked by vast open horizons, cold muted tones, and a complete absence of life.
Creating Empty Space
To evoke the desolate mood, maximize negative space. Place your subject low or off-center, swallowed by a vast horizon. This scale imbalance instantly suggests isolation.
Color and Weather: Avoid vibrant or warm sunlight. Stick to overcast skies, flat diffused daylight, or a cold, muted palette of grays, slate blues, and pale ochres to strip away any sense of life or comfort.
