Disquieting — a visual mood that evokes subtle unease, using uncanny lighting, harsh shadows, or quiet wrongness to make a scene feel subtly unnerving.
Staging Visual Unease
To evoke unease without overt horror, rely on subtle wrongness. Dialing down warmth and using cold, unnatural light sources creates instant tension.
Keep the frame uncluttered. High contrast lighting paired with deep negative space (the empty, unfilled areas of an image) forces the viewer to search the quiet corners, heightening the psychological suspense.
